“Our Town” Project:

In July 2012, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) announced 80 “Our Town” Grant awards. Grants were made to partnerships that included a non-profit arts organization and a local government entity. Through Our Town, the NEA supports creative place making projects that help transform communities into lively, beautiful and sustainable places with the arts at their core.

Arts Enter Cape Charles, in partnership with the Town of Cape Charles, Citizens for Central Park and the Cape Charles Business Association received the prestigious award, as one of only two recipients in the state of Virginia. The project partners are committed to engaging the community to establish the town as an arts and cultural destination.

An integral part of this grant is a Harbor for the Arts Festival. A planned annual Festival during the first two weeks of August. that features live, free entertainment in public spaces throughout Cape Charles. Dance, music, art and theatre will be presented at the Town Harbor, Central Park, Strawberry Street and Mason Avenue. This includes an international dance workshop at the Historic Palace Theatre through Experimental Film Virginia that will bring artists and performers from around the world to Cape Charles.

At the heart of this project is creation of a broad-based arts plan that will compliment the Cape Charles Comprehensive Plan, the Community Trail Master Plan and the Cape Charles Harbor Plan.
